Josh Schmidt – A Day in the life of a Stock Legal intern

My typical weekdays start at 7:45 AM. I wake up and groggily silence my alarm as I contemplate if I can sleep for another 5 minutes. After losing that battle, I get out of bed and get ready for the day. I brush my teeth, throw on my clothes, and pack my lunch. I get into my car a little after 8 AM and drive to the office.

I get to the office around 8:45 AM. This gives me plenty of time to pour myself some coffee, catch up with the team, and get ready to work. Throughout the day I work on various tasks for the different teams we have at the office. From legal research and memos to witnessing and printing estate planning documents – there is always something to do at Stock Legal! Sometimes, I get to sit in on a client meeting or participate in an “all hands” meeting at the firm. At the office, everyday is different. I am always on my toes throughout the week. This allows me to learn on the fly and adapt to the many different situations that present themselves on a daily basis.

I leave the office at 4:00 PM and get ready to sit in gridlocked traffic for 40 minutes (my normal commute is 10 minutes long). As my road rage subsides, I pull into my neighborhood and get ready to relax for the rest of the day. I change into more comfortable clothes and head to the gym. At this point, it is about 5:00 PM, which means I have the pleasure of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for the second time today! I use my commutes to either call my friends and family or damage my ear drums by listening to music far too loud.

Once I get back from the gym, I eat dinner and watch a show or a movie to wind down. Sometimes, I use this time to work my other jobs or prepare for the upcoming semester of law school. Around 11:00 PM I brush my teeth and get ready to sleep. At midnight, I set my alarm for the morning, put my phone down, and head to sleep as I prepare to do it all again the next morning!

What Keeps Me Motivated in Estate Planning

People often ask me why I love my job—helping clients with their estate planning. The answer is simple: my clients themselves. Every meeting is a new opportunity to connect with people and hear their stories. I get to learn about their families, their careers and the lives they’ve built—often over decades of hard work, sacrifice and love. It’s a privilege to sit with them and see everything they’ve accomplished laid out on paper.
